Art Neauvou
[ Styles from 1890’s-1900 ]

The Big Bang
During the 1880’s, the French printer and designer Jules Cheret discovered that it was technically possible produce multicolor posters in only a few printings instead of having to use a single print for each tone. These advances lead to the development of color posters in which two design elements-text and image- could be interwoven into a coherent whole. Graphic design industry regards that discovery as a “big bang” moment in the 1890’s. It fitted perfectly into a new visual age that saw not only the first magazine illustrated (Jugged) with photographic reproductions but also the new medium of film.

The Arts and Craft Movement
Initiated in reaction against the perceived impoverishment of the decorative arts and the conditions in which they were produced, the movement flourished in Europe and North America between about 1880 and 1920. Some consider that it is the root of the Modern Style

Jugend Magazine (Jugendstil, Jugend style)
